There are many medications that can interact with mental health medications. Of note, it is important not to use monoamine oxidase inhibitors, linezolid, intravenous methylene blue, St. John’s Wort, cocaine, or MDMA (also known as “Molly” and “ecstasy”) with mental health medications due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Furthermore, bupropion should not be used with medications that lower the seizure threshold, such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, theophylline, and systemic corticosteroids.
To give your medication the best chance of working, you should avoid drinking alcohol while taking your medication. Speak to your provider if you have questions about how alcohol may interact with your medications.
This list is not exhaustive, and patients should inform providers of all medications and supplements they are taking to determine if there are any concerning drug interactions.
