You should consult your provider regarding your recommended dosage.
In general, people with less than 10 genital herpes outbreaks per year should take valacyclovir 500 mg once daily for a preventative dose. Valacyclovir 1,000 mg daily is recommended for people with 10 or more outbreaks per year.
Patients infected with HIV may be recommended to take 500 mg of valacyclovir twice a day for prevention.
Be sure to remain well hydrated when taking valacyclovir, to prevent any damage to the kidneys.
