What dosage of valacyclovir should I take if I want to treat an outbreak?

In general, to treat an initial episode of genital herpes, the FDA recommends taking valacyclovir 1 gram (1,000 mg) twice a day for 10 days starting at the first sign or symptom of lesions, preferably within 48 hours of onset.

For recurrent episodes of genital herpes, the FDA recommends using 500 mg of valacyclovir twice daily for 3 days starting at the first sign or symptom of lesions, preferably within 24 hours of onset. The CDC recommends the same regimen or an alternative regimen of valacyclovir 1 gram (1,000 mg) one time a day for 5 days. 

For patients with HIV with an initial herpes outbreak, guidelines recommend valacyclovir 1 gram (1,000 mg) twice a day for 7–10 days. For recurrent episodes, HIV guidelines recommend valacyclovir 1 gram (1,000 mg) taken twice a day for 5–10 days.
