Can Menopause Change my Mood or Cause Mood Swings?

Although most women make the transition into menopause without experiencing a major mood disorder, it is possible for menopause to cause changes in mood or mood swings.

Hormonal changes, life stress, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, infertility, and aging can all cause emotional distress that may lead to mood swings or, in more severe cases, anxiety or depression. These fluctuations can also worsen already existing mood disorders.

Although these symptoms may go away on their own after several months to years, women should talk to their doctor if they are experiencing ongoing panic, anxiety, and depression.
