Are there any conditions I should be concerned about if I have been diagnosed with genital herpes?
Answer: Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). If you have been diagnosed with genital herpes, it is strongly recommended that you get tested for other STDs.
HIV is a particular concern for people with genital herpes. Genital herpes increases the risk of acquiring HIV from a partner. This is at least partly due to inflammation caused by the herpes infection even when you don’t have an active outbreak. There is a higher level of CD4+ T cells in the genital tissues of people with genital herpes and these are the very cells that get infected with HIV.
People who have HIV and genital herpes are also more likely to transmit the HIV virus to others when they have an outbreak. This is because the genital herpes ulcers also shed the HIV virus.
