I Take Wellbutrin for Depression. Can I Still Take Bupropion (Generic for Zyban) to Help Me Quit Smoking?

No. Wellbutrin and bupropion have the same active ingredient call bupropion. Taking bupropion in addition to Wellbutrin would result in very high blood levels of bupropion. This greatly increases the risks for side effects like seizures.

Besides smoking cessation and depression, bupropion is also used off-label for weight loss. It is also one of two drugs in and FDA approved weight loss medication called Contrave. If you are taking any other medication containing bupropion, you should not take bupropion to help you quit smoking.

Some of the more common brand names are: Aplenzin, Budeprion SR, Budeprion XL, Buproban, Forfivo XL, Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, Zyban.
