Antibiotics. Can I continue to take my ED medication?

Macrolide Antibiotics (Clarithromycin, Biaxin, Erythromycin) —  Can I continue to take my ED medication?

Certain antibiotics such as Clarithromycin (Biaxin) and erythromycin interact strongly with PDE 5 inhibitors by decreasing their breakdown thus leading to higher blood levels.

These medications are taken for:

  • Respiratory infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, throat infections, pertussis)
  • Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • H. pylori (a bacteria that infects the stomach and can cause ulcers).

All oral ED medications need dose reductions if you are taking these antibiotics for anything.

Please discuss with your doctor any antibiotics and any other medications you are taking before beginning your ED medication. This includes OTC medications, vitamins, herbal remedies, etc.
