ED is caused by a variety of reasons, both physical and psychological.
PDE 5 inhibitors help up to 85% of men with various causes of ED get erections.
However, the medication does not alter the underlying causes of ED for better or worse. In other words, if you stop taking the medication your erectile function will revert to whatever it would have been if you had never taken the medication to begin with.
In certain cases with a large psychological component, taking ED medication may restore a man’s confidence so that he is able to start getting erections even without medication.
On the other hand, sometimes people can become psychologically dependent on the medication where they are unable to get and/or maintain an erection without it because they’ve been taking it for a while and have developed beliefs and anxieties that prevent them from normal erectile function without the medication.
For this reason, we definitely recommend not taking ED medication if you do not have any ED.
However, medication is not known to cause worsening of ED from a physiological perspective.
